Guitar Lessons and Consulting Services

Private Lessons

Welcome blues guitarists, blues-rock guitarists and fans of all guitar music related to America’s original contribution to world culture.

I have been playing in bands and as a solo guitarist for over 40 years. I have been teaching almost as long as early on I realized I liked to share my knowledge and was able to communicate it. In 1988 I became a music journalist and began writing for the guitar and blues magazines, as well as for the Hal Leonard Corporation where I remain an author of over 150 instructional blues, classic rock, jazz and country music books.

My philosophy is based on teaching students to improvise and accompany others with expression by learning and internalizing the styles and songs of their favorite artists. I create a no-pressure environment where we work together at the student’s own pace for a fun and productive learning experience. The ability to read music is not required or used as I have developed a unique diagram system which I employ for writing down the lessons.

Lessons are by the hour or 1.5 hours and can be scheduled between 4 and 7pm, Monday through Friday. Lessons can be scheduled before 4 PM with advanced notice. Please contact me for current rates.

I feel privileged to be able to pick up the guitar every day and play the music I love, and I love sharing my enthusiasm with my students and the readers of my books.

Guitar Buying and Repair Consulting
I am available to accompany individuals to music stores to assist in the purchase of guitars, amps and effects. Besides owning numerous guitars and amps, I am knowledgeable about vintage and new gear and have written extensively on the topic in my books.  Guitar buying and repair consulting services are based on an hourly fee.
Blues History Consulting
I consult and edit for writers and authors of blues, rock, jazz and country books. My hard copy music library, along with thousands of vinyl and digital recordings, is extensive and I have made an ongoing study of post 1900 American popular music.  Please contact me to discuss services and fees.
